There are other organizations seeking a Convention to propose Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Notably, Balanced Budget Amendment (BBA) has 26 live applications, [[Convention of States]]® has 19, and Wolf-PAC has 3. There are others, and California also has Newsom's 28th Amendment "common sense gun control" Article V application ([[California Senate Joint Resolution 7]]) as well which we should expect will find its ways to other Democrat-controlled states. Convention of States® is not the only effort to call for a Article V application to Congress for a convention for proposing Amendments. There are Left-leaning efforts to make the Constitution more progressive on topics of Gun Control, Free Speech Control, and to eliminate Electoral College, literally seeking to change our Republic into a democracy - the 17th Amendment was a step in that direction, something they applaud. Wolf-PAC is a left-wing organization also advocating for a constitutional convention [https://wolf-pac.com/](https://wolf-pac.com/)  Although founded in 2011, it has fewer applications in passed by state legislatures, not surprisingly from Democrat dominated states (CA, VT, RI). If Congress were to call a convention based on an aggregation of all Article V applications passed by various movements, then their proposals may find their way into convention for proposing Amendments, or at least this would likely be the mindset of Democrat delegates from Democrat-controlled States regardless of how delegates would be selected. Wolf-PAC is an organization seeking the passage of a vague constitutional amendment to ostensibly get money out of politics and end federal and state corruption. This will infringe on fundamental First Amendment freedoms of speech and expression by limiting the ability of individuals to contribute to their preferred political organizations. Wolf-PAC also seeks to change the Constitution to describe the U.S. form of government as a “democracy” when, in fact, our country is a constitutional republic and the founding fathers strongly opposed a democratic system of government. Wolf-PAC is fighting to reshape the Democratic Party to embrace an Article V amendments convention in order to make the Constitution more progressive. In fact, the name given to their proposed amendment in the text of their applications is the “Democracy Amendment.” Wolf-PAC’s proposed amendment to the Constitution seeks to insert the word “democracy” in reference to our form of government, when in fact it is a republic, sometimes referred to as a “democratic republic,” but a republic nevertheless. Nowhere in the Constitution or in any of its amendments is found the word “democracy.” Instead, Article IV, Section 4 of the Constitution, specifically states: “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican form of Government , and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened), against domestic Violence.” Furthermore, the Constitution outlines how the branches of the federal government operate as a republic. It was not until the ratification of the 17th Amendment in 1917, which provided for the direct election of U.S. senators by popular vote in each state, that people could democratically vote for their state’s own U.S. senators. Before the 17th Amendment, under Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution each state’s U.S. senator was “chosen by the Legislature thereof,” meaning that the U.S. senators acted much like ambassadors to the federal government representing the interest of their home state’s government. This is how Wolf-PAC characterizes the 17th Amendment: --- "The 17th Amendment is the best example we have of a convention campaign effectively working to add an Amendment in the U.S. Constitution. "Until the early 1900s, U.S. Senators were appointed by the State Legislatures. This was widely seen as a form of corruption due to the disproportionate influence wealthy individuals & special interests had over the process. "The people responded to this overt corruption by using every tool of democracy available to them, including; petitions, local legislation, ballot referendums, educational campaigns, resolutions calling on Congress to propose a Constitutional Amendment, and finally applications for an Article V convention to propose an Amendment _(referred to by the Congressional Research Service as the “prodding effect”)_. "When the Article V convention movement was just one state shy of the ⅔ needed to force a convention on this topic, Congress reacted by proposing an amendment for the direct election of U.S. Senators out to the states for ratification, resulting in the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution." [https://wolf-pac.com/the_solution/](https://wolf-pac.com/the_solution/) --- This was an essential check on the federal government by the states that sadly no longer exists in the Constitution. In fact, a repeal of the 17th Amendment would be an ideal candidate for a new constitutional amendment proposed by Congress (rather than by an unpredictable, and potentially lethal Article V convention would be to our Constitution and republic), in order to restore the original republic and reassert the constitutional sovereignty of the states. A new constitutional amendment, regardless of its stated purpose, with the word “democracy” sneaked in the text, would have even more far-reaching consequences to our Constitution in decades and centuries to come. The courts and elected officials would more than likely interpret the new “democracy clause” to justify an array of radical changes and provisions, such as the abolition of the often-called “undemocratic” Electoral College to the potential constitutionalizing of presently unconstitutional welfare and socialized medicine legislations that are approved by popular majority-vote. Again, there are deep consequences to consider beyond the feel-good notion that a few new Amendments tailored to our conservative mindset could fix everything. I certainly trust the Founders and our Constitution, and the good and necessary Amendments, but again, I do not trust the people seeking to undermine it who have been doing so and seeking to do more over the past century.
